The challenge of limitations
Last night I started an eight week Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins in London. I chose this course because it’s a computer free. If you are going to learn about the nitty gritty of graphic design you should start with pen and paper.
The first class didn’t disappoint. Limited to a pen, a piece of paper and some words we had to communicate each word in the form of a line. Setting limitations is challenging, but also helpful. You concentrate on the essence.
It’s one of the 10 Principles of Good Design by Dieter Rams: Good design is as little design as possible. And if all you have is a line, it’s certainly not very much.
